Thinking a lot about how our kitchen cabinets/island etc. are going to work. I've already decided on Ikea's Applad range. It's plain, has a nice finish to it and is above all affordable.

I've been measuring out the spaces and trying to work out what sort of cabinets will go where. I'm thinking simple cupboards along the wall and wide drawers under the island. One of the spaces for our kitchen cabinets will fit in 3 wide cupboards and 1 skinny so it's nice to see what it might look like.

When I saw this picture it started me off thinking about an open shelf below the slim wall cabinets we're going to have - question is, are we disciplined enough to keep them tidy!?

Now here we have the sink of my dreams - unfortunately it doesn't seem to exist in real life, at least in the UK anyway - trust me I've looked! So it got me thinking that perhaps we should have wall mounted taps over the sink? Might be a nice compromise?

bib taps or mixer?

Having rejected the smeg fridge freezer idea (after hearing some bad reviews on performance we went to look at one and decided that it really was just a very expensive lump of plastic!) I have been thinking about an integrated fridge freezer. Problem is that ikea don't do a cabinet in the size we want to get so I think we're going to have to get something bespoke. I've been looking at pictures of ply type cabinets and wondering if that might work. We could also incorporate fred's dream cupboard - one of those slim pull out things and storage to the ceiling to utilize space.

We're kind of, almost, just about getting there... I went to the house yesterday and they had plastered the living/dining room walls which made that bit look loads more finished and really exciting! Until then here are the rest of the before pics I took...

The hall coming from the kitchen when we moved in... The wall on the left has gone now and the kitchen doorway has been moved and widened to make room for these little beauties. *Note the delightful dog gate which was used to contain the rottie and staffie who lived in the kitchen fireplace.

Up the stairs and landing when we moved in. It all looks very different now but I don't have any pics at the moment. The whole of the upstairs has been stripped, floorboards stripped, walls skimmed and painted and new electrics installed.

The bathroom, which is now a completely empty room! it's been knocked through and the toilet door blocked up. Those tiles are actually wallpaper - what a genius idea!

My studio - this was the worst room, the occupant had a house cat confined to this room and there was a massive smell of something illegal when he finally unbolted the door!!!

I'm pretty sure our bathroom walls will be Prismatic oblong tiles in a brick layers pattern similar to this image on the left but I hadn't thought of adding a dark border to the bottom where the tiles meet. It looks more purposeful and thought out so it's certainly something to consider. I love the hexagon tiles but they don't seem to exist in this country so I am currently searching for an alternative.

Have ordered the sink, toilet, taps, shower rail and shower valve now I just have to sort out the shower head, shower curtain, radiator and tiles...

The stained glass window man came yesterday and took the broken glass away to be fixed. It was the first chance we had to see the light shine through as until now it has been protected by a piece of hardboard. I'm really pleased with the colours as it was all looking very dark and dull, it's amazing what a little light can do.

The US seem to have a lot of things I lust over - mainly retro fridges, cookers and sinks - oh and Reeces peanut butter cups are pretty god damn good!

F spotted this house for sale near us. Of course we're not in the market for another and this was a bit out of our budget but just check out all the original features. Just imagine, all you'd need to do was pull up the carpet, pull down the curtains, paint everything and maybe replace the tiles round the fireplace and it would be drop dead gorgeous. 'Determine the gallery level. There are slight disagreements over what gallery level is. Many experts say it is the eye level of the average person (the average person is 5'7"). This rule was made when the height of the average person was slightly shorter. As a result, a rule of thumb is to go by the eye level as determined by the height of the property owner or gallery owner. When you hang the painting, the focal point should be at gallery level. If the painting is off balance to the right or left, the focal point can be moved slightly to the right or left to make up the difference.

To find your focal point... The focal point of the painting can usually be found dead center. I say usually because the measurement is taken vertically only. The focal point is where the artist intended your eye to be drawn to first. To determine the focal point, use a tape measure to calculate the distance from the top of the frame to the bottom of the frame. Next, divide that number by two. Re-measure the second number from the top of the frame down again and the area directly around that point is your focal point. If you have a conglomeration of paintings, the focal point is in the center of that group.'

This is our front door and downstairs hall, taken the day we finally got the keys. The only things that's changed so far is the carpet and the curtains both of which I had great pleasure in ripping out about 5 minutes after I took the photographs.

Following on from my last post if I had an infinite amount of money (which I don't) I would definitely go for a vintage Bateau bath. Of all baths only a Bateau can get away with having rose petals scattered into it.

F is going to collect our cast iron bath at the weekend (thanks Sam) it's a giant leap of faith because we have no experience of showering over a roll top, we are such shower people so it's an important factor. Last night I even had a bad dream about a really horrible old shower curtain sticking to me! Anyway we were offered the bath at a bargain price and just couldn't refuse. Our last bathroom refurb in the flat utilised the existing standard bath so I'm pleased it's going to feel different and it will definitely make a great focus point. I was going to paint the underneath a very safe grey but looking at these pictures I just keep coming back to black.

I think this is the first time in my life I have ever owned a wheelie bin, oh the joy of it! However, I'm not exactly thrilled at the thought of looking at it through my kitchen window... and I still haven't figured out where to put the recycling.

I don't think it's enough of a problem to justify spending over £1000! That's how much this little baby is. Thud. That's the sound of me fainting at the ridiculousness of it. Perhaps I can just rip off this look by buying something a lot cheaper, painting it and growing plants all over it...

2 separate little sheds - One for recycling with 3 shelves and a wheelie bin shed. Though that bit of wood across the front would probably get on my nerves every time I used it.

At the moment the house has a seperate living room, dining room, kitchen and hall but we'd love to open it up, bringing in more light and creating more space. Because the space is going to be quite large the plan is to put a pair of slim reclaimed doors between the kitchen and open plan living/dining area to conserve heat when needed and shut the naughty dog away when we want to. At the moment the doorway is to one side so we'll probably move it so that both doors can fold flat against the wall. Yet to decide which side they fold flat against but probably the dining room side.
